On November 29th, 1807, Queen Mary the Mad, prince John VI, and the whole Portuguese crown fled to Brazil and continued their rule remotely. Their decision to move the Brazilian capital from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro created conflicting alliances among the families in Bahia. Should they be loyal to the crown and the new capital of Rio de Janeiro, or be allied to the former capital of Bahia when exporting their goods?
